Nonso Obikili is an economist and received his doctorate in economics from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He is currently a director at the Turgot Centre for Economics and Policy Research in Abuja, a policy associate at Economic Research Southern Africa in Cape Town, and chief economist at the Businessday newspaper in Lagos. He also servers on the board of the Nigeria Tax research Network, and the Economic History Society of Southern Africa, and was previously a West African Research Association fellow at American University.
His research focuses mostly on African economic history and development but includes some work on taxation and political economy. On economic history, his work focuses on pre-independence institutional development, the factors that shape the characteristics of these institutions and their evolution over time. Other work focuses on the intersection of democracy, voting patterns, and development outcomes.
His work has been published in journals such as the Economic History Review, the Journal of Development Studies, and the Journal of African Economies.
