Jessica Preece is an Associate Professor in Political Science at Brigham Young University where she is the co-director of the Gender and Civic Engagement Lab and an affiliate with the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy and the Politics, Economics, and Development Labs. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles and was a visiting scholar in the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan in 2018. Jessica’s research is primarily on candidate emergence—how individuals decide to run for office. In particular, she focuses on the steps political parties can take to encourage more women to run and win, and she has specific expertise in the causes and consequences of women’s underrepresentation in the Republican Party. She frequently partners with practitioners to design and test interventions to boost women’s participation through the use of randomized controlled trials. Her research has been published in top political science journals, such as the American Journal of Political Science, the Quarterly Journal of Political Science, and Political Behavior.
