Jacob Kopas

Jacob Kopas is a Staff Attorney on the International Program Team at Earth Justice. He received his PhD in Comparative Politics and International Relations from the Political Science Department at Columbia University in New York.

His research focuses on two areas related to his professional experience working in human rights and environmental law. The first investigates the intersection of law and politics, paying special attention to the power of legal rights to promote political engagement and mobilize participation. The second focus examines environmental politics and the political economy of environmental protection. Research projects included studying how political distortions affect the designation of protected areas, approval of environmental clearances, and siting decisions for coal plants.

Kopas graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School. His professional portfolio includes international litigation related to human rights, indigenous peoples’ rights, and environmental protection. He has published policy reports on the legal implications of climate change and large development projects. Kopas’s regional focus is Latin America where he has researched, worked, and lived for over 9 years.
