Dana Burde is Associate Professor and Director of the International Education Program at New York University, Affiliated Faculty at NYU’s Wilf Family Department of Politics, NYU Abu Dhabi, the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University, and the Center for Economic Research and Policy (CERP) in Lahore, Pakistan. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal on Education in Emergencies.
Dana’s research focuses on the effects of conflict on education, the efforts of humanitarian organizations to mitigate these effects, and the relationship between education and political violence or peace. She uses diverse research methods including qualitative case studies and complex field experiments (randomized controlled trials) that rely on both large-scale surveys and in-depth, qualitative interviews. Her book, Schools for Conflict or for Peace in Afghanistan (2014 Columbia University Press) received the 2017 Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order. Her research has also been published in Comparative Education Review, American Economic Journal—Applied, International Journal of Educational Development, Reveiew of Educational Research, the New York Times, among others.
