Bilal Murtaza Siddiqi

Bilal is the Director of Research at the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at the University of California, Berkeley, where he articulates and advances CEGA’s intellectual agenda. His research interests lie in political economy and applied microeconomics, focusing on the relationship between law, institutions, conflict, and development. Prior to joining CEGA, Bilal spent five years as an Economist at the World Bank’s Development Impact Evaluation department, where he oversaw global research programs on judicial reform and digital identification systems, and worked with governments and donors to embed research and impact evaluation into their operations. He was previously a Minerva Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at Stanford University, and a Marie Curie Scholar at the Institute for International Economic Studies at Stockholm University. He received his Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Economics from Oxford University, where he was based at the Centre for the Study of African Economies and studied as a Rhodes Scholar.
