Drew Dimmery is Professor of Data Science for the Common Good at the Hertie School. He writes and teaches on quantitative methodology at the intersection of causal inference and machine learning, with an emphasis on the design and analysis of experiments. He is an expert in causal machine learning, adaptive and algorithmic experimental design, and the evaluation of complex digital systems such as social media platforms and artificial intelligence.
Prior to returning to academia, Dimmery spent four years as a research scientist at Facebook in the United States, where he developed and studied methods for adaptive experimentation in large-scale online systems. He was part of the US 2020 Facebook and Instagram Election Study (FIES), a landmark research collaboration between independent academics and Meta that measured the effects of social media on political attitudes, beliefs, and behavior during the 2020 US elections.
Dimmery’s research has appeared in top machine learning venues, including the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), the Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD), and the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics (AISTATS), as well as in general-interest journals such as Science, Nature, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He received his PhD in political methodology from New York University.
