Gemma Dipoppa is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. Her research examines contemporary challenges to state capacity, focusing on organized crime, migration, and environmental degradation. She studies the exploitation of illegal migrant labor, investigating its determinants and consequences, as well as interventions that can help migrants escape oppressive working conditions. Another crucial challenge she examines is the enforcement of environmental regulations. Her research analyzes how states manage violations of environmental laws and the obstacles that hinder their ability to effectively target polluters.

Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Nature, American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Law, Economics, and Organizations, and Journal of Industry, Competition, and Trade. Prior to joining Columbia, she completed her Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford and an Assistant Professor position at Brown University.
