EGAP 20: Bogota, May 2017

Bogotá, Colombia
May 5-6, 2017
Hosts: Juan Vargas, Universidad del Rosario, and Andrés Moya, Universidad de los Andes
Theme: Elections & Representation. Elections are often the most concrete opportunity that citizens have to shape the state that governs them. Despite this, they too often result in the elevation of candidates that are not (or are not felt to be) representative of the electorate's many ascriptive dimensions. In recent years, researchers have applied rigorous methodology to drill down into the reasons for this dissonance, and to explore solutions to complex questions surrounding the interactions between voting incentives, social demography, and electoral outcomes. This workshop will serve as a forum to highlight this research and to discuss future work aimed at understanding political accountability and the role of identity in voting behavior and political representation.
