Her research focuses on the politics of development, organized around three themes: 1) culture and development, 2) information, accountability, and service delivery, and 3) migration. Her current book project,\u00a0<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/melinaplatas.com\/dissertationbook-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">Culture and the Persistence of Inequality<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0presents the colonial roots of\u00a0educational inequality across religious groups in Africa, and the cultural factors that have allowed inequality to persist. She employs a variety of methods, ranging from field experiments to ethnography. The regional focus of her research is sub-Saharan Africa, where she has worked and conducted fieldwork in eight countries since 2005. She is a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/aalims.org\/people\/faculty-fellows\/melina-platas\" target=\"_blank\">faculty fellow<\/a>\u00a0at the Association for Analytic Learning about Islam and Muslim Societies (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/aalims.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">AALIMS<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"o-generic-links wp-block-paragraph\">Melina is a contributor for the\u00a0<em>Washington Post\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/monkey-cage\/\" target=\"_blank\">Monkey Cage<\/a>, and a panelist on\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/933kfm\" target=\"_blank\">KfM<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Hot Seat<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/ntvuganda.co.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\">NTV Uganda\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=ntv+uganda+fourth+estate\" target=\"_blank\">Fourth Estate<\/a>\u00a0in Uganda. She worked as a reporter at the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.monitor.co.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Monitor<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Independent<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>magazine in Kampala, Uganda, from 2007-2009.
