Lucy Martin is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Global Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has a Ph.D. in Political Science and an M.A. in Economics from Yale University. Her research interests include the political economy of development, African politics, experimental methods, and formal theory. Her current book project examines the relationship between taxation and political accountability in sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, she is interested in how taxation affects citizens’ demands for accountability. The book introduces and tests a theory to explain patterns of taxation in Uganda and other African countries, including when governments will choose to tax their citizens, and when they will seek quasi-voluntary compliance rather than taxing coercively. She has conducted fieldwork in Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda.
